Christmas markets in France 2026: That means sparkling lights on historic half-timbered houses, festive market stalls and the aroma of roasted almonds and French specialities. But which Christmas markets should you make sure to visit this winter? We’ve picked out five exceptional destinations that impress with their atmosphere, special settings or great attractions. From the famous Christkindelsmärik in Strasbourg to the huge Christmas wheel in Lille, there’s something for everyone.
Our top 5 most beautiful Christmas markets in France 2026 take you to Alsace, Lorraine and the north of France. We introduce you to the markets in Strasbourg, Colmar, Metz, Arras and Lille – each with a real Christmas market photo, confirmed dates and a link to our detailed event page. The ranking is our editorial selection based on Christmas spirit, visitor experience and setting; it is not an official award.
France is surprisingly diverse during Advent. In Alsace, German and French Christmas traditions come together to create a distinctive atmosphere. Further west, Metz offers modern winter attractions and fascinating light displays. In the north, Arras and Lille impress with magnificent squares and a festive fairground atmosphere. Many of these cities are also easy to reach by train. That makes their markets ideal for both day trips and short Advent road trips.

27 November to 24 December 2026 · Strasbourg, Alsace
The Christkindelsmärik is considered one of Europe’s most traditional Christmas markets. Its origins date back to 1570. The Gothic cathedral is particularly impressive, rising majestically above the old town among festively decorated market stalls. Around Place Broglie and many other squares, the chalets invite you to browse and explore. Once night falls, the historic city centre is transformed into a warmly glowing sea of fairy lights and Advent decorations.
But Strasbourg offers much more than a single market. At Place Kléber, you’ll find a huge Christmas tree, while smaller squares tempt you with crafts and Alsatian specialities. The Village de l’Avent also offers family-friendly activities. Typical Bredele biscuits, gingerbread and hot drinks are part of the experience, as are the exceptionally elaborate decorations on the façades. For us, Strasbourg is France’s most beautiful traditional Christmas market because almost the whole old town joins in the celebrations.
Our tip: Plan a walk from Place Broglie via the cathedral to Place Kléber. It’s often quieter on weekdays or in the morning than at weekends. On Christmas Eve, the market stalls close earlier.

23 November to 29 December 2026 · Colmar, Alsace
If you’d like to feel as though you’re in a Christmas film, you should visit Colmar. Colourful half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and winding squares look beautiful even without lights. During Advent, they’re joined by festively decorated stalls, fairy lights and lovingly arranged shop windows. The Petite Venise district and the square at Ancienne Douane are especially popular photo spots. The combination of waterways, market stalls and colourful façades creates a unique atmosphere.
Several Christmas markets with different themes are spread across the historic city centre. The setting at Place des Dominicains feels almost ceremonial, while other areas focus on regional produce, crafts or family activities. There’s also a dedicated gourmet market and a Ferris wheel as part of the Advent programme. These attractions may stay open beyond the end of the traditional Christmas markets, making Colmar an appealing destination for a longer winter break.
Our tip: Visit Colmar in the late afternoon and stay until after sunset. That’s when the illuminated half-timbered houses look especially beautiful. If you’d like to combine Strasbourg and Colmar, plan separate visits rather than rushing through both cities.

20 November to 30 December 2026 · Metz, Lorraine
If you love Christmas markets with a little action, you’re likely to be especially happy in Metz. The city spreads its Christmas market across five squares. Around 130 chalets offer winter food, drinks and gift ideas. Special attractions add to the appeal: the Ferris wheel stands in front of the impressive cathedral at Place d’Armes, and a 81-metre-high observation tower has been announced for Place de la République in 2026. This gives you unusual views over the illuminated city.
Another highlight is the Sentier des Lanternes. You’ll find numerous illuminated figures and installations there, which you can discover on a walk around the site. The illuminated trail has its own opening hours, so these are different from the market hours. You can also stroll through the historic centre between the squares decorated for Christmas. The combination of market stalls, heights and illuminations makes Metz our top pick for an experience among the five cities.
Our tip: Start your visit in daylight with the cathedral and Ferris wheel. Then take in the illuminated trail after dark. The Christmas markets are closed on 25 December; Christmas Eve opening hours are also different.

27 November to 27 December 2026 · Arras, Hauts-de-France
The setting alone makes Ville de Noël Arras special. The spacious Grand-Place is surrounded by impressive historic gabled houses, whose Flemish-inspired architecture creates an almost fairytale atmosphere. During Advent, festively illuminated chalets and food stalls are set up between the façades. This gives the city a feel that is both grand and cosy. The façades are already lit at dusk, making it a particularly good time for photos.
The Christmas town also has plenty to offer families. In previous years, the Grand-Place has featured a Ferris wheel and a Christmas carousel, among other attractions. Our photo shows these attractions from the 2025 edition. Always check the current organiser’s programme for the exact line-up of rides for 2026. You can also combine a visit to the market with a lovely stroll to Place des Héros and the historic belfry. Arras is therefore our favourite for an impressive square setting.
Our tip: Take a walk around Grand-Place and Place des Héros shortly before sunset. The market is closed on 25 December; opening hours are shorter on Christmas Eve.

18 November to 30 December 2026 · Lille, Hauts-de-France
The Lille Christmas Market combines a cosy Christmas village with an attraction that catches your eye from afar. At Place Rihour, charming huts offering gifts, decorations and winter treats stand side by side. Just a few minutes’ walk away, a large illuminated Ferris wheel stands on Grand-Place. It offers a great view over the city and brings plenty of funfair atmosphere to the Advent season. The Ferris wheel and historic façades make a particularly lovely sight in the evening.
The compact city centre is easy to explore on foot, making Lille ideal for a spontaneous trip with friends or family. You can easily spend several hours between the Christmas village, food stalls and shops. The Ferris wheel is even set to stay open until 16 January 2027 in 2026—longer than the market at Place Rihour. Rides cost extra. Another advantage is how easy it is to reach the city centre from Lille Flandres and Lille Europe stations.
Our tip: Start at the Christmas village, then head to the Ferris wheel at dusk. You’ll get the best view of the illuminated city centre. The Christmas village is closed on 25 December.

If you’d like to visit several destinations, it’s worth taking a look at the map. Strasbourg and Colmar are both in Alsace, making them ideal stops on a Christmas market trip. Metz is an interesting addition if you’re especially interested in the Ferris wheel, observation tower and light installations. Arras and Lille are good choices for a trip to northern France. So you don’t necessarily need to fit all five destinations into one trip.
Travelling by train is also a good idea, especially at weekends. Historic city centres often have restricted car access, and the most popular market stalls can get busy. For a more relaxed experience, choose a weekday or arrive in the early afternoon. Also check the daily opening hours before setting off: Christmas Eve and 25 December in particular have special arrangements. You’ll find the details you need to plan your visit in our five linked event listings.
For classic Christmas romance, Strasbourg takes first place. If you love colourful half-timbered houses and fairytale photo opportunities, you should choose Colmar. Metz is our tip for special winter attractions and illuminated displays, while Arras impresses with its unique Grand-Place. Lille is a great destination for Ferris wheel fans. Of course, it’s a matter of taste—you may even discover your personal favourite once you’re there.
You can find even more Christmas markets, winter wonderlands and funfair dates in our events calendar.
