Christmas markets in Switzerland 2026 mean twinkling lights, historic lanes, impressive mountain scenery and plenty of Christmas magic. But which markets are especially worth a visit? We have selected five exceptional destinations that delight visitors with their settings and experiences. From Santa Claus flying over Lake Geneva to a walk-through Advent wreath in the heart of Zurich, there is something for everyone.
Our top 5 of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Switzerland 2026 take you to Montreux, Basel, Einsiedeln, St. Gallen and Zurich. For each market, you will also find the confirmed dates, an authentic photo or a clearly labelled generic image, and a direct link to the relevant event listing. The order reflects our personal editorial selection based on atmosphere, special features and visitor experience – it is not an official ranking.
Every market has its own character. While Montreux surprises you with its lakeside promenade and Ferris wheel, Basel delights with its lovingly decorated old town. Einsiedeln stands out for its imposing monastery façade, St. Gallen for its hundreds of light-up stars, and Zurich for its newly designed Advent experience. That is why our ranking is about more than just size. The key questions are: where can you soak up the true Christmas spirit, and what special things can you experience there?

20 November to 24 December 2026 · Montreux, Lake Geneva
More than 170 festively illuminated chalets await you on Montreux's lakeside promenade. Arts and crafts, regional specialities and winter drinks come together in a beautiful setting right on Lake Geneva. Mountains rise in the background, while the market lights are reflected in the water in the evening. Montreux is therefore ideal if you are looking for a Christmas market that is also an unforgettable day-trip destination.
The main highlight is the flying Santa Claus. Several times a day, his illuminated sleigh glides over the promenade: usually at 17, 18 and 19 o'clock, with an extra flight at 16 o'clock at weekends. Watching is free, but the flight may be cancelled in strong winds. There is also a Ferris wheel on Place du Marché, offering views of the lake. If you want to experience even more, you can combine your visit to the market with a mountain railway trip to Santa's house on Rochers-de-Naye; additional charges apply.
Our tip: Come before dark, enjoy the lakeside promenade and then watch the Santa show amid the sea of lights. For us, Montreux is the clear favourite for exceptional Christmas attractions.

26 November to 23 December 2026 · Basel
Basel Christmas Market is one of Switzerland's best-known Advent destinations. Around 150 festively decorated stalls are spread across Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz. The setting in front of the historic minster is particularly beautiful. There, strings of lights bathe the trees in a warm glow, while an elaborately decorated Christmas tree towers above the market. You can also visit both squares as part of a leisurely stroll through Basel's old town.
Alongside arts and crafts and gift ideas, you will find specialities such as Basler Läckerli, raclette and other winter treats. For children, the fairy-tale forest on Münsterplatz is a real highlight: creative activities such as candle dipping and gingerbread decorating are part of the Advent experience. Basel was also voted Europe's most beautiful Christmas market in 2021. While that alone does not determine our ranking, it shows the market's special reputation.
Our tip: Visit both main squares, then head to the Pfalz behind the cathedral. From there, you can look out over the Rhine. Also note the earlier closing times on the last market day.

27 November to 6 December 2026 · Einsiedeln
At the Einsiedeln Christmas market, the setting takes centre stage. A festively decorated market stands right in front of the impressive Baroque monastery complex and stretches along the village's main street. More than 140 stalls, a large Christmas tree and warm lighting create a particularly romantic atmosphere. As the sun sets, the monastery square looks almost like a film set.
Among the wooden huts, you'll find traditional crafts, decorations, gift ideas and culinary specialities. You can also explore the sights of the monastery village. Unlike the very large city markets, the atmosphere here is often a little more peaceful. However, the Christmas market lasts only ten days, so it's worth planning ahead, especially if you have a weekend visit in mind.
Our tip: The blue hour is perfect for photos. If possible, travel by train: the market entrance is just a few minutes' walk from the station.

26 November to 24 December 2026 · St. Gallen
During Advent, the whole of St. Gallen's old town is transformed into a world of stars. More than 600 glowing stars hang above the historic lanes. This makes even a stroll through the city a festive experience. The cosy star market on Gallusplatz adds little wooden huts, handcrafted goods and treats to the displays. The nearby UNESCO Abbey District also provides a beautiful historic setting.
The programme includes the festive Sternissage, extra Christkindlimarkt dates and the traditional Chlausritt. There are also various opportunities for a culinary break at the market stalls and around the Vadian monument. St. Gallen is therefore especially suitable for anyone who wants to combine a smaller market with an atmospheric stroll through the old town.
Our tip: Don't just go from stall to stall; follow the stars through the city centre. The archive photo is from the former Christmas market area on Marktgasse; today's star market is on Gallusplatz.

19 November to 23 December 2026 · Zurich, Sechseläutenplatz
Zurich's Christmas market at Bellevue 2026 is being redesigned. Right in front of the opera house, the Bellevue Noël will feature over 100 market and food stalls, a cosy fondue chalet and a dedicated children's area. Lake Zurich is just a few steps away, so you can easily combine your visit with a walk along the lake promenade or a stroll around the city.
The most unusual attraction is a walk-through Advent wreath, which offers an elevated view over the market. Admission is free, but you need a free ticket for a specific time slot. There are also activities and little surprises for children. If you like modern Christmas market ideas and special photo opportunities, Bellevue Noël is well worth a visit.
Our tip: Book a time slot for the Advent wreath in good time. As the new market is making its debut in 2026 and we don't yet have an original photo that is free to use, we're deliberately using a clearly labelled illustrative image here.

| Christmas market | Date | Special feature |
|---|---|---|
| Montreux Riviera Noël | 20.11.–24.12. | Flying Santa Claus |
| Basel | 26.11.–23.12. | Old Town & Fairy-tale Forest |
| Einsiedeln | 27.11.–06.12. | Monastery Square |
| St. Gallen | 26.11.–24.12. | 600 stars of light |
| Bellevue Noël Zurich | 19.11.–23.12. | Walk-through Advent wreath |
For many of the five destinations, travelling by train is a good option. For example, you can easily visit Basel as a day trip from southern Germany. Zurich and Einsiedeln, on the other hand, can be combined on a longer trip. St. Gallen also makes a good stop in eastern Switzerland. Montreux is further west and, with its location on Lake Geneva, makes a lovely trip in its own right.
Pay particular attention to the different event periods: Einsiedeln ends on 6 December, Basel and Zurich close shortly before Christmas, while Montreux and St. Gallen run until 24 December. Special opening times may also apply on public holidays. Some attractions, such as the Advent wreath in Zurich or the mountain railway ride in Montreux, also have their own ticket rules. We therefore recommend checking our linked event pages before you travel.
Do you love unusual attractions? Then Montreux is our top choice. For classic Christmas romance, we recommend Basel, while Einsiedeln impresses with its monastery setting. St. Gallen enchants with its many glowing stars, and Zurich surprises with a modern Advent concept. Ultimately, your favourite depends on the kind of Christmas atmosphere you're looking for.
