Thrill rides: pure adrenaline at the funfair

If you are looking for the ultimate thrill at the funfair, head for the high-thrill rides. These rides spin you through the air, launch you upwards or leave you hanging upside down above the fairground. Many of them reach G-forces comparable to those of large roller coasters. One example is the Jetlag.

What thrill rides are there?

On looping and propeller rides, a long arm spins like a propeller, repeatedly turning you upside down. The Top Spin spins a whole row of seats through loops between two arms, often ending with water fountains. On the pendulum or Frisbee, a round gondola swings higher and higher like a giant pendulum while spinning. Finally, on catapult and rocket rides, you are shot skywards in a capsule at tremendous acceleration.

What you should know before riding

Thrill rides almost always have a minimum height requirement, often between 1,30 and 1,40 metres, and sometimes a maximum height too. Before riding, put loose items such as your phone, glasses or keys in a locker or leave them with someone you are with. If you have cardiovascular problems or are pregnant, you should avoid these rides. The operator's notices are usually clearly displayed at the entrance.

Travelling rides: safety on thrill rides

Many people wonder how safe the most intense rides are. In Germany, rides are classified as travelling structures. They need an operating permit and are regularly inspected by experts. The responsible authority also inspects each ride after it has been set up. Before the ride starts, staff check every safety bar individually. Many thrill rides also have double restraints, such as a shoulder bar with an additional belt. This means you can focus on the excitement. Still, always follow the staff's instructions.

Use the filters above to find the most intense rides by G-force and inversions. If you prefer rides on rails, take a look at the looping roller coasters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most extreme ride at the funfair?
It depends on what you consider extreme. Catapult rides offer the strongest acceleration, propeller rides the most inversions, and drop towers the biggest falls.
How tall do you have to be for thrill rides?
There is usually a minimum height requirement of between 1,30 and 1,40 metres. Some rides also have a maximum height so that the safety bars can close securely.
What should I do with my phone and glasses during the ride?
You should put loose items away safely before the ride, for example in a locker or with someone you are with. Many operators provide storage shelves at the entrance.
