Ferris wheels: the best views over the fairground

No other ride shapes the look of a funfair quite like the Ferris wheel. You can see from a distance where the celebrations are taking place. At the top, the whole fairground lies at your feet, and in clear weather you can see far beyond the city. That is why a ride on the Ferris wheel is an essential part of a funfair visit for many people, especially in the evening when the lights come on.

How tall are travelling Ferris wheels?

Transportable Ferris wheels come in many sizes. Smaller wheels are around 20 to 30 metres tall and can fit into smaller events. The largest travelling Ferris wheels, on the other hand, reach 50 to 60 metres. Despite their size, they are completely dismantled for every event and transported by numerous lorries. It takes several days to assemble the larger wheels.

Open or enclosed gondolas?

Nostalgic Ferris wheels often have open gondolas. You can feel the wind and enjoy unobstructed views in every direction. Modern Ferris wheels, by contrast, usually have enclosed, glazed cabins. These protect you from rain and cold, making them popular at winter fairs and Christmas markets too. Some wheels also offer special gondolas, such as ones with glass floors or VIP cabins.

Tips for your ride

Ferris wheel technology at a glance

A Ferris wheel consists of a supporting frame, an axle and the wheel itself, with spokes and gondolas. It is usually powered by tyres that press against the rim. The gondolas hang freely and can rotate, so they always stay upright. On modern wheels, thousands of LEDs create changing light displays that can be seen from far away in the evening. For transport, the wheel is dismantled into many individual parts. These fit on low-loaders and articulated lorries, and an experienced team can use them to assemble a sturdy Ferris wheel again within a few days.

A ride on a Ferris wheel usually lasts several revolutions, giving you plenty of time to take photos. It is at its best at dusk: you can still see the fairground in daylight while watching the lights come on. The Ferris wheel is also suitable for all age groups, including people who do not enjoy fast rides. If you are looking for more thrills at height, you will find them on the towers.
