Le Sphinx – Marchal

The walk-through mirror maze at fairgrounds in France

Operator: Marchal

Le Sphinx by Marchal is a French mirror and glass maze, familiar at major fairs in northern France. Instead of a ride in gondolas, you’ll find a walk-through puzzle made up of reflective and transparent surfaces. The fun comes from finding the right way through: where there seems to be a clear passage, there may be a glass panel, while an apparently closed section may actually lead onwards.

Highlights & records

Walk-through mirror and glass maze with optical illusions; recurring appearances in Lille and Saint-Quentin.

At Le Sphinx, your sense of direction shapes the experience: behind the mirrored surfaces, there is no quick ride cycle waiting, but your own route through the maze.

This is how you experience Le Sphinx

The appeal of a hall of mirrors lies in the fact that your eyes cannot always reliably distinguish between a reflection and a clear path. You walk through the maze yourself and set your own pace. Unlike a ghost train, no car takes you along a fixed route. Instead, you have to find your bearings, pay close attention to your surroundings and find the right direction.

Le Sphinx is part of the French tradition of the “Palais des Glaces”. These attractions rely on optical illusions, unusual perspectives and the moment when you suddenly see your own reflection in front of you. Especially with friends or family, finding the exit becomes a little competition. The other visitors’ reactions are part of the experience too.

History of Le Sphinx in northern France

Palais des Glaces Le Sphinx has been documented at French fairgrounds for many years. The name already appears in reports about the Foire de la Saint-Denis in Saint-Quentin and the Foire aux Manèges in Lille in 2015. The reports show that the glass maze was part of the well-known attractions there, alongside large circular rides and children's carousels.

A specialist overview of the Lille funfair 2024 lists Marchal as the operator of Le Sphinx. The attraction also appears in a list for the Lille edition 2026. This long-standing presence in the same region makes the maze a recurring feature of the northern French fair scene. Unlike a modern thrill ride, its appeal lies not in technical records but in the timeless principle of optical illusion and discovering it for yourself.

Who is the glass maze suitable for?

Le Sphinx is an alternative for funfair visitors who are not necessarily looking for high speeds or loops. Here, attention, orientation and a willingness to be taken in by the optical illusions are what count. If you want a break from big rides, you can enjoy a different kind of entertainment without having to leave the fairground.

As you make your way through the maze yourself, you should follow the guidance given at the entrance on accompanying children and moving safely through the maze. For comparisons with other walk-through attractions, you can find more examples in our attraction directory.
