Rotor – Nathalie Van Vught

Classic Rotor – the Kleefwand

Operator: Nathalie Van Vught

Year built1954

Rotor Van Vught is a travelling centrifugal-force ride operated by Belgian showwoman Nathalie Van Vught. The ride is a classic Rotor design, also known in the Netherlands and Flanders as a “Kleefwand” – literally, a “sticky wall”. The name gives away the principle: in a rapidly rotating cylinder, you simply stick to the wall. At fairs such as the Foire de Liège, the Rotor is one of the most unusual classics.

The floor drops away, and you stick to the wall: the Rotor is one of the most astonishing centrifugal-force experiences at the funfair.

What riding Rotor Van Vught is like

You stand with your back against the inside wall of a large, round room. The cylinder then starts to rotate, slowly at first and then faster and faster. At a certain point, centrifugal force presses you so firmly against the wall that you can hardly move. In the classic Rotor design, the floor then lowers, leaving you suspended against the wall.

Spectators can also watch from a gallery, which has always made the Rotor a crowd-puller. The staff on site will explain exactly how the ride programme works on this ride.

The history of Rotor Van Vught

German engineer Ernst Hoffmeister invented the Rotor in the 1940s. The principle then took fairs across Europe by storm. Today, only a few of these rides are still travelling. Belgian trade sources also mention the operators Trehout and Gillet in connection with a Rotor, alongside Nathalie Van Vught. It has not yet been established whether this is the same ride.

Operators and guest appearances

The ride is currently attributed to Nathalie Van Vught. The organiser’s line-up of rides will tell you whether the Rotor is at your fair. You can find the dates in the funfair calendar, and more classics in the attractions overview.

Who is Rotor suitable for?

The Rotor is suitable for teenagers and adults who want to experience an unusual sensation. It is not intended for young children. The minimum height and health information are posted at the entrance. If you are sensitive to spinning, it is best to watch from the outside first. Be sure to maintain the prescribed body position throughout the ride.
