Popcorn Party – De Poorter

Belgian circular ride with moving cross-arms

Operator: Angelino De Poorter (historically from 2022; current status to be checked)

ManufacturerSobema; later modified by KMG
Year built1995

Popcorn Party is an unusual Belgian ride that differs from a classic Break Dance. The ride combines spinning gondolas with a distinctive movement of the gondola crosses. This creates a ride where you do not just circle around the centre, but also experience changing directions of movement. The ride is known as a standalone design and has been technically modified over the course of its history.

Highlights & records

Rare ride with liftable cross arms; specialist sources describe it as a one-off.

An extraordinary classic with its own distinctive movement.

What the Popcorn Party ride is like

During the ride, the gondolas move on several levels of the structure. The rotations of the gondolas and the crosses overlap. One particularly striking feature is that, unlike many other rides, the cross arms can be raised. This means the perspective changes during the ride. If you enjoy rides with multiple types of movement, this offers a distinctive alternative to well-known Break Dance rides.

How intense you find the ride depends, among other things, on the ride programme and where you sit. No reliable information on the maximum speed, acceleration or ride duration is available for this specific ride. These figures are therefore deliberately not taken from similar rides.

History of the Popcorn Party

Specialist sources give 1995 as the year it was built and Sobema as the original manufacturer. The design was later modified by KMG. In particular, the gondola arrangement and roof structure were adapted. Early records describe it as a one-off of this type. It would therefore be misleading to give it a generally accepted series designation.

The operator history initially lists N. Derieuw. The ride was then associated for many years with Henri Van Herck and Carla Van den Bossche. Both helped shape its presence at Belgian funfairs. After a later change of operator, the ride continued under the name De Poorter. The exact current ownership arrangement is not fully documented by official sources, so it is not presented as an unchanging fact.

An authentic archive photograph shows the ride at the Meifoor in Bruges in May 2022. This confirms a historic location, but does not establish a specific appearance in a future season. If you see listings with the same name, always check whether they actually refer to this particular ride.

Timeline

Specialist records give 1995 as the year it was built (Sobema) and note a later modification by KMG, with an altered gondola arrangement and the roof removed. After its long period with Van Herck / Van den Bossche, De Poorter is listed from 2022. Current ownership details still need to be checked.

Who is this ride suitable for?

If you enjoy dynamic rides and changing spinning movements, this ride could become one of your favourites. However, the combination of different movements may be uncomfortable for very sensitive riders. Before getting on, check the safety instructions and the height and age rules published by the operator on site.

Current ride prices and exact operating conditions may vary from one fairground to another. You should therefore check them directly at the ticket booth. For comparisons with other rides, see more profiles in our Attractions directory.
