Polyp – Rodel
Classic Swiss Polyp with spinning gondolas
Operator: Showman family Rodel / A. Rodel GmbH (Switzerland)
The Polyp von Rodel is a classic circular ride that has been part of Swiss fairs for many years. Its name already gives away its shape: several arms extend from a central column, with gondolas circling at their ends. Like an octopus, the arms rise and fall as the whole ride spins.

Highlights & records
Classic Polyp ride operated by the Swiss showman family Rodel, a regular feature at Swiss Chilbis for many years.
The arms rise and fall while the gondolas spin on their own axes: the Polyp by Rodel makes every ride a different combination of movements.
What it's like to ride the Polyp by Rodel
You sit in a gondola and experience several movements at once. First, the large circular motion gathers speed. Then the arms rise and fall, so you sometimes float high above the fairground and sometimes whizz just above the ground. The gondolas also spin, repeatedly changing the direction you face. That makes a ride on the Polyp feel much livelier than a turn on an ordinary carousel.
A typical moment is when your gondola seems to fly straight towards the spectators. That's when the screaming is loudest.
Polyp by Rodel: history and operator
The Polyp belongs to the Swiss showman family Rodel and has been a regular visitor to Chilbis in German-speaking Switzerland for years. The Wädenswiler Anzeiger had already reported on the Polyp by Rodel at the Chilbi in Wädenswil in 2019. In autumn 2026, the ride was at the Basel Autumn Fair.
Polyp rides have been classics at European fairgrounds for decades. It has not yet been made public who built the ride owned by the Rodel family or what year it dates from. You can find more classics in our overview of attractions, and current dates in the funfair calendar.

Who is the Polyp suitable for?
The Polyp is a classic for teenagers, adults and families with older children. It's lively, but has no inversions. If you're sensitive to spinning motions, watch a full ride first. The rules on minimum height and accompaniment are posted at the ticket office. At the Basel Autumn Fair 2026, the Polyp at the fairground was also one of the rides with a family discount.
