Crazy Dance – Karl Schweig

Belgian windscreen wiper ride

Operator: Karl Schweig

Crazy Dance Schweig is a travelling ride operated by Belgian showman Karl Schweig. Belgian industry listings classify it as a Tripride or windscreen wiper ride. Despite the similar name, it is not a Break Dance. At funfairs such as the Foire à 1 Euro in Huy, Crazy Dance is one of the rides with plenty of movement.

Back and forth, round and round: Crazy Dance makes its gondolas dance across the fairground like windscreen wipers.

What it’s like to ride Crazy Dance Schweig

Windscreen wiper rides typically have swinging passenger carriers. As the ride rotates, the gondolas swing back and forth like windscreen wipers. This means the direction and acceleration change at short intervals, and you never know exactly where the next movement will take you. The ride programme also ensures that no two circuits feel the same.

There are no inversions. Even so, the ride is livelier than it looks from the outside. So it’s worth watching a complete circuit first.

History of Crazy Dance Schweig

Windscreen wiper rides have been part of the funfair scene in Belgium and the Netherlands for decades. Belgian listings have included Karl Schweig’s Crazy Dance for several years, including at Huy. However, other rides with the same name travel around Belgium, such as one operated by the De Smet family. The manufacturer and year of construction of Schweig’s ride have not yet been documented publicly.

Who is this ride suitable for?

Crazy Dance is suited to teenagers and adults who enjoy quick changes of direction. Older children often ride too, provided they meet the minimum height requirement at the entrance. If you’re sensitive to spinning movements, it’s better to try a gentler carousel first. Put loose items away securely before the ride, for example in a zipped jacket pocket. It’s also best to take off hats and glasses beforehand.
