Hansemarkt Dortmund 2026: a journey through time in the heart of the city

The 30 Dortmunder Hansemarkt transforms several central squares into a world of traditional crafts, a farmers’ market, a historic fair and medieval entertainment. The area around Reinoldikirche is at its heart, but Alter Markt and the surrounding streets are also part of the experience. So it’s worth exploring the city centre rather than heading straight to just one stage.

The setting is part of the concept: rescued half-timbered houses are specially erected and decorated with historic objects and autumnal touches. According to the City of Dortmund, these include Haus Mentler from Dortmund-Kirchhörde, as well as half-timbered houses from Dortmund-Aplerbeck and Osnabrück. Straw, pumpkins, carts and old farming equipment create the right atmosphere. The atmospheric lighting adds to it, especially in the evening.

Knightly battles, entertainers and fire shows: the highlights

Things get loud, lively and occasionally spectacular here. Knightly groups face off in front of Reinoldikirche, entertainers perform their tricks and musicians bring medieval sounds to the city centre. There’s also acrobatics and fire performance. If you’re looking for action, be sure to stop by the tournament arena. The later fire shows should be especially impressive as darkness falls.

The organiser has published specific show times for 2026. The programme includes the Fictum knightly group at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:45 o’clock; entertainer Bagatelli, for example, at 12:30 and 16:15 o’clock; and the Arcus music group in the afternoon and evening. Chůdadlo’s fire show is scheduled for 17:30 and 20:00 o’clock. A large fire display with a fire show and music is planned for 18:45 o’clock, followed by an evening concert by Arcus at 19:30 o’clock. These times are based on the published daily schedule and may change at short notice.

Our tip: watch the knightly battles during the day, then come back later for a fire show. In between, there’s time to explore the nostalgic fair and the craft stalls. The general programme on the stage by Reinoldikirche is scheduled daily from 12 to 21 o’clock. This lets you plan your visit around the shows, whether or not you’re going shopping.

Nostalgic funfair instead of high-tech: discover historic rides

At Alter Markt, it’s all about another side of funfair history. Here, the focus isn’t on height and speed, but on elaborately designed classics with historic charm. The Dortmund showmen’s association Rote-Erde is taking part in the historic fair. Old rides, lovingly crafted details and traditional showmanship create a striking contrast with the modern shopping city.

A particular highlight is the historic ghost train from 1938 that has been announced. It takes funfair fans on a little trip back in time – without you having to step into a museum. The programme also includes nostalgic fair attractions. The best way to check which rides are actually there is to visit the market and consult the organiser’s latest information.

If you’re mainly coming for the rides, start your visit at Alter Markt. Then head to Reinoldikirche for the shows. This way, you can enjoy two completely different experiences without leaving Dortmund city centre. And there’s plenty to discover in the surroundings, even when you’re not on a ride.

Crafts, farmers’ market and authentic historic half-timbered houses

Traditional crafts are another highlight. According to the city, around 25 different crafts will be presented, including rammed-earth building and blacksmithing. Craftspeople from several European countries demonstrate how everyday objects and crafted items are made using traditional methods. You can often watch them at work, making this far more engaging than a simple exhibition.

Children can also take part in many demonstrations. That’s ideal for families: after a round of the rides, there are real hands-on activities to enjoy. The market stalls are also worth a look. The farmers’ market and crafts are joined by an autumnal setting with historic vehicles and buildings. So take your time to have a closer look at a stall or two. Encounters like these are what give the historic market its character.

Hansemarkt Dortmund: dates, opening hours and admission

The 30 edition takes place from Wednesday, 4 November to Sunday, 8 November 2026. The market is open on all five days from 11:00 to 21:00 o’clock. Admission is free. Additional costs may apply for rides, food, drinks or purchases. No booking is required for general admission to the market.

The market extends across several areas of Dortmund city centre. You’ll find the medieval and show area by Reinoldikirche. The Old Market is the place to go for the historic fair; the farmers’ market and traditional crafts are planned for Kleppingstraße. As the routes are centrally located, you can easily combine your visit with a walk.

If you’re visiting for the day, it’s a good idea to arrive around lunchtime. You can then explore the market stalls and rides before the evening atmosphere and fire shows begin. If you’re travelling with children, you can plan an earlier visit. You can also find all the information in one place at Hansemarkt Dortmund 2026 – event, times and location..

Sunday shopping on 8 November: combine the market with shopping

On Sunday, 8 November 2026, the Hansemarkt coincides with a Sunday shopping day. Shops in the city centre within the Wallring, as well as those in Thier-Galerie, may open from 13:00 to 18:00 o’clock. The Sunday is also billed as a family day with activities and medieval music. This lets you combine a stroll around the city with a visit to the historic market areas.

If you want to see as many shows as possible, however, you shouldn’t focus solely on Sunday afternoon. The market programme itself runs on the other days too. So if you’d prefer a quieter visit, you can also come during the week – though, of course, there’s no promise that visitor numbers will be lower.

Getting there, exploring the market and tips for your visit

The main event areas are in the pedestrian zone around Reinoldikirche and the Old Market. That’s why travelling by public transport is often easier than driving right up to the market stalls. Reinoldikirche station is close to the event area. If you’re planning to drive, check parking options and possible road closures in the city centre beforehand.

For an enjoyable walk around the market, a simple route works well: start at the Old Market with its historic rides, then head to the craft stalls and finally to the tournament grounds by Reinoldikirche. If you stay into the evening, you can round off the day there with fire performances and live music. Warm clothes and weatherproof shoes are a good idea, especially in November. It can also get busier around stages and popular attractions at times.

There’s plenty going on in the region beyond this event too. Browse the funfair calendar with more events to discover more fairs and folk festivals.

In conclusion: why the Dortmunder Hansemarkt is worth a visit

For five days, jousting meets shopping streets, historic rides meet a modern city backdrop, and craftsmanship meets fire artistry in Dortmund. This contrast is exactly what makes the event interesting – even for people who usually prefer traditional funfairs. The mix of entertainment, a freely accessible market stroll and a genuine city-centre atmosphere is a particular highlight.

If you fancy an autumn day out with a little more history, showmanship and nostalgia, add the Hansemarkt to your list. And tell us in the comments: would you visit the historic ghost train first, or would you rather watch a fire show?
