Pirate Ship – Neil Pont
The modern Güven ship swing ride at British winter funfairs
Operator: Neil Pont (United Kingdom)
Neil Pont's Pirate Ship is a modern ship swing ride made by Güven Amusement Rides. Built in 2024, the ride combines the familiar movement of a large pirate ship with a design that stands out particularly at British winter festivals and Christmas celebrations. Rather than inversions, the focus here is on swinging: the large gondola swings back and forth between two raised points, giving riders the familiar thrill of a ship swing ride.

A large pirate ship and a classic swinging motion: Neil Pont's Pirate Ship is all about the thrill of swinging.
What a ride on Pirate Ship is like
The ride's operation is easy to see even before you get on. The ship hangs from a large support structure and initially moves only slightly back and forth. Gradually, the swinging motion becomes more pronounced. As it rises, the view over the surroundings changes before the ship swings back towards its lowest point. The changes of direction are an essential part of the experience.
Unlike a roundabout ride, the gondola does not rotate continuously in a circle. This repeated swinging motion is what makes ship swing rides distinctive. During the ride, guests see their surroundings alternately from a higher and a lower position. From the outside, you can easily follow the swings as they grow larger and spot the ride from a distance by its distinctive silhouette.

History of Neil Pont's Güven ship swing ride
The Pirate Ship, now operated by Neil Pont, was made by Güven Amusement Rides in 2024. British ride archivist Chris Howe documented it at Tinseltown at the Trafford Centre in the same year. His footage shows the ride both in motion and from a spectator's point of view.
In winter 2025/26, the ship swing ride was part of the offering at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London. The event is known for its mix of classic rides, large roller coasters and winter-themed attractions. The Pirate Ship is also listed as a ride in the 2026/27 programme. This relatively new Güven ride has therefore become part of one of Britain's best-known winter funfairs.
The name “Pirate Ship” is also used for other ship swing rides. This profile therefore focuses on the operator Neil Pont and the Güven ride built in 2024. It should not be confused with older pirate ships or those built differently by other showmen.

Who is Pirate Ship suitable for?
Pirate Ship is ideal for anyone who enjoys a classic ship swing ride and would rather experience a large swinging motion than fast rotations around several axes. Depending on your personal sensitivity, however, the repeated changes in height may still feel intense. If you are unsure, watch a full cycle before riding and follow the notices at the ticket booth.
The current requirements for minimum height, age and accompaniment are provided by the operator at the ride. Prices and ride times may also vary by event, so the information on site takes precedence. The large shared gondola offers families and groups a different experience from small individual cabins. Find more rides to suit different preferences in our attractions overview.
