Highway Rallye by Kutschenbauer and Lars Langenscheidt is a travelling children's race track with a course shaped like a double figure eight. The ride combines the theme of driving with classic funfair entertainment for younger visitors. Small vehicles follow a set route. This makes the ride different from children's bumper cars, where the vehicles move around on a shared area.

Children's cars on a figure-eight track

Highway Rallye by Kutschenbauer and Lars Langenscheidt is a classic children's race track with a figure-eight layout. This travelling ride combines a long funfair tradition with a ride for young visitors.

The ride on the fairground

According to Ride-Index, Highway Rallye requires an area of 19 by 9 metres. This describes the footprint of this particular ride. The guided figure-8 track is the key feature that sets it apart from children's bumper cars and simple roundabouts. At a fair, the track can stand as a distinct type of ride among the children's attractions.

The name is not unique, however. There are other Highway Rallye rides, including one designated number 2 operated by other owners. That's why the combination of year of construction, manufacturer and operator history is important for identifying it correctly. The ride described here is the Strempel version from 1986.

Highway Rallye: the driving experience on the figure-eight track

The defining feature of the Highway Rallye is its winding track. The vehicles travel around two connected loops. As a result, riders change direction several times and see the activity on the fairground from different angles. This makes it a distinctive experience for children: they sit in a small vehicle but remain on the designated track. The course of the ride is also easy to follow from the sidelines.

Unlike a large roller coaster, this ride is not about height or fast descents. Instead, it offers a gentle drive around the fairground. Parents and accompanying adults can watch the children as they pass by. The ride also makes a quieter stop between the Ferris wheel, carousel and other family attractions.

History of Highway Rallye and its operators

The documented ride was built by Strempel in 1986. Ride-Index describes it as a children’s track or double-8 track and lists Kutschenbauer from the Bremen/Delmenhorst area as the operator. The ride was previously with Sluppke in Hamburg. The operator change is dated 1991 in the ride database.

Lars Langenscheidt is also associated with Highway Rallye. A newspaper report on the Vreden funfair introduced him in 2024 as a showman who had been bringing this ride to Vreden for around three decades. A report on Bremen’s Osterwiese 2023 explicitly named Lars Langenscheidt and Johann Kutschenbauer as joint operators of the children’s attraction. The different references to Kutschenbauer and Langenscheidt are therefore not sufficient reason to create two separate Highway Rallye profiles.

Timeline

Strempel built the children’s track in 1986. Ride-Index lists Kutschenbauer from Bremen or Delmenhorst as the showman and Sluppke as the previous owner until 1991. Kutschenbauer’s Highway Rallye is also documented in publications from Soest; similarly named rides run by other operators should be treated separately.
