Highlights & records
Historic waltzer with Mexican styling, palm and cactus motifs, and sombrero gondolas.
Viva Mexico shows just how much character a historic waltzer can have: spinning gondolas, a clear theme and authentic Hamburg Dom tradition.
What is a ride on Viva Mexico like?
A waltzer is quite different from a conventional roundabout. While the whole ride is in motion, the individual gondolas can also spin around their own axes. This creates a mix of circling and spinning, which can vary from gondola to gondola. The ride feels lively without taking on the character of a modern thrill ride with inversions.
The special appeal lies in the combination of classic mechanics and the individual movement of each gondola. If you board with friends, you experience the spins together and can watch the neighbouring gondolas move. From the outside, the whole thing looks like a colourful carousel ballet. Its design also stands out from many technically austere round rides: here, the Mexican theme is not just a name, but part of the whole appearance.

The story of a special waltzer
The ride was made by Mack and built in 1973. It made its debut on 1 May of the same year in Lüneburg. Harry Nülken acquired the waltzer in 1973, according to the official Hamburg Dom website. The ride was known for many years by its former name, Holiday-Star. It only received its current name when it passed to the next generation and Peer Nülken.
Its long family history explains why Viva Mexico is more than just a single carousel ride for many visitors to Hamburg. The Hamburg Dom describes it as the last waltzer of its kind in Germany. At a time when new rides are getting ever taller and faster, it preserves a piece of fairground history. Its Mexican appearance and distinctive gondola movement give this classic its own character to this day.

Who is Viva Mexico suitable for?
Viva Mexico appeals to visitors who enjoy nostalgic rides and a sociable carousel experience. The waltzer offers more movement than a gentle round ride, but does not rely on extreme heights or spectacular loops. It is therefore particularly appealing if you would like to try a traditional funfair ride and are comfortable with spinning.
If you are sensitive to spinning, watch a ride before boarding. The current riding conditions are displayed at the ride. It is also worth stopping to watch: the sombrero gondolas, colourful façade and circling movements create a distinctive sight. You can discover more nostalgic rides in our attraction overview.
