Bavarian Ferris wheel – Willenborg
Enclosed gondolas and panoramic views high above the fairground
Operator: Heinrich Willenborg GmbH (München)
A large observation ride operated by the Munich showman family Willenborg travels under the name Bayerisches Riesenrad Willenborg. Its enclosed gondolas offer a peaceful view over fairgrounds and the surrounding area. Even from some distance, the wheel serves as a landmark: its circular silhouette rises above the roofs of the stalls and shows you where the centre of a fair is. While other rides focus on speed, the appeal here lies in the slow change of perspective.

Highlights & records
Large travelling observation Ferris wheel with 36 enclosed gondolas; not to be confused with the Willenborg family's Oktoberfest Ferris wheel.
The Bayerisches Riesenrad combines sweeping views with the gentle pace of a classic gondola ride – especially impressive amid a sea of lights in the evening.
Bayerisches Riesenrad Willenborg: The panoramic ride
You board an enclosed gondola at the bottom of the wheel. The wheel then moves steadily, and the people at the fairground grow smaller below you. As you climb higher, you can make out the layout of the rides, paths and stalls. The moment when you can see the entire fairground is especially lovely, with individual attractions looking like miniature models. The gondolas hang freely from the structure and remain upright as the wheel turns.
The timing also shapes the experience. In daylight, you can clearly see the surroundings and the size of the event. After dark, the scene changes: the lights of the stalls, carousels and streets shape the view. You can also see from above how differently each attraction is lit. So the same ride offers a different experience in the afternoon and evening.

Bayerisches Riesenrad Willenborg: History and features
Heinrich Willenborg GmbH is one of Germany's well-known Ferris wheel operators. The Bayerisches Riesenrad should be distinguished from other wheels owned by the family. In particular, the historic Oktoberfest Ferris wheel is a separate structure with a different number of gondolas and a different manufacturer. More recent Willenborg wheels should not be confused with the Gerstlauer wheel described here either.
The Bayerisches Riesenrad is part of the development of large travelling observation wheels from the late nineties. Specialist directories list the ride as a Gerstlauer construction with 36 enclosed gondolas. This design combines the ability to travel between fairs with an impressive viewing height. For the operators, each location involves extensive assembly and dismantling, while visitors mainly experience the completed structure, visible from far away.
The ride is identified by the combination of its operator, manufacturer and number of gondolas. This matters because the Willenborg name appears on several different Ferris wheels. These differences make it particularly interesting to look at the design: not every wheel with the same family name offers the same views, gondola design or technical construction.

Who is this Ferris wheel for?
The Bayerisches Riesenrad is especially appealing if you prefer a panoramic ride to a fast spinning ride. The enclosed gondolas let you take in the surroundings at a relatively gentle pace. For couples and families, sharing the view can be a lovely contrast to the bustle below. If you are afraid of heights, though, bear in mind that the wheel rises far above the usual carousels.
Boarding and disembarking are carried out according to staff instructions. Please observe the passenger admission requirements and any rules on accompanying guests at the relevant location. Allow yourself a moment to enjoy the ride without rushing: after all, taking in the surroundings is the main reason for the ride.
