Grande Roue de Lille – Lestoquoy / Van Der Honing
The traditional Christmas Ferris wheel overlooking the Grand-Place
Operator: Matthieu Lestoquoy (operations manager); Jan Van Der Honing (historically named as owner)
Grande Roue de Lille is one of the best-known winter rides in northern France. On the Grand-Place, right among the historic façades, the Ferris wheel lifts you above the centre of Lille. The view over the festively lit streets is particularly impressive after dark. Unlike a classic thrill ride, this attraction focuses on the view, a gentle ride and shared moments.

Highlights & records
Traditionally on Lille’s Grand-Place since 1989; replacement of the previous open gondolas with enclosed gondolas announced for the 2026 season.
A peaceful panoramic experience above Lille’s rooftops – especially atmospheric as the evening lights come on.
What a ride on Grande Roue de Lille is like
After you board, your gondola slowly rises above the square. Within a few metres, the view changes: people and market stalls grow smaller as the old town’s rooftops come into view. At the top, you can take in the Grand-Place and its architecture at your leisure. As the wheel turns steadily, speed is not the main attraction. Instead, take time to enjoy the ride and look for interesting views.
The operator’s website gives the previous installation’s height as 50 metres and its ride time as about five minutes. It also describes 36 gondolas. However, new enclosed gondolas were announced for the 2026 winter season. Historical images and the previous gondola configuration therefore do not necessarily reflect the current setup.

Grande Roue de Lille: History and special features
The history of the Ferris wheel in Lille dates back to the 1988 winter fair. It moved to the Grand-Place as early as 1989. The ride above the city centre thus became a Christmas tradition. The operator’s history names Jan Van Der Honing as the owner and Matthieu Lestoquoy as responsible for operations. These details describe the installation’s documented history; they do not automatically prove that the ownership structure remained unchanged in every later season.
Another special feature is its setting in the city. Instead of standing at the edge of a large funfair site, the Ferris wheel is right in the historic city centre. The façades, Christmas tree and changing lights are therefore an integral part of the experience. The lighting and electrical connection have also been modernised in the past. The installation is not just a ride, but also a landmark visible from far away during Advent.
Timeline
1988 first appeared at Lille’s winter fair; on the Grand-Place since 1989. 2009 modernisation of the lighting and electrical connection. New enclosed gondolas announced for December 2026; check historical gondola numbers against the pre-refurbishment setup.

Who is the Ferris wheel suitable for?
If you enjoy the view and atmosphere, this is a good ride for you. The Ferris wheel is also appealing to couples and families, as it has no rapid changes of direction or loops. However, if you are sensitive to heights, bear in mind that the gondola rises high above the square. Check the current rules for children, accompanying adults and accessibility on site, as these may change with the gondola refurbishment.
A tip for your visit: try to ride at twilight. You can still see details of the buildings as the first lights come on. If it is very busy, visiting on a weekday may be more pleasant. Also bear in mind that the Ferris wheel may stay open longer than the Christmas village itself. Check the current dates and prices with the operator before your visit. Find more seasonal destinations in the funfair calendar.
